IRS Delays Tax Filing Season

The IRS announced that they will be delaying the start of the tax filing season by nearly two weeks, to February 12, 2021. The tax filing deadline, which was delayed in 2020 due to the virus, will move back to its normal date of April, 15.

In making the announcement, the IRS said they were instituting the delay to "ensure that eligible people will receive any remaining stimulus money as a recovery rebate credit when they file their return.”

I understand why the IRS pushed back the beginning of the tax filing season. They have a lot on their plate and it's laudable that they want to make sure anyone who is owed stimulus funds gets them. However, I'm a little perplexed why they didn't push the deadline back the same number of days or longer. They just seem to be asking for trouble later on down the road.

Will this change affect when you plan to file your taxes? This won't change much for my wife and I because we tend to file our taxes between late February and mid-March, but I wonder if the people who were expecting additional stimulus funds they haven't received and planned to file as soon as they could are a little frustrated right now.

Imagine they will extend the deadline again for filing, and probably just want to see how it goes the first few weeks, hoping there are no issues. But no doubt shrinking the window isn't the best idea. I'm having to wait to file to get my stimulus rebate. Its a little frustrating, but I changed bank accts, so I kinda asked for it. Since I owe, its not a big deal for me either way.

I really hope they push back the deadline as well. It only makes sense to move both the dates, not just the start of the season.

Deadline is pushed back a month, thankfully:
